Juuuust to let you know that The Dressing Party will be on holiday for a couple of weeks... This post is in no way intended to incite any kind of jealousy, purely informative I’m letting you know that I will be enjoying a trip to the (hopefully) sunny South-America. I’m planning on eating loads of steak, drinking loads of wine and getting loads of sunshine...again, purely informative.

It’s not just any trip, it’s a once in a lifetime trip. Well, I hope that at least since it’s my honeymoon. Since blogging during your honeymoon would surely have negative effects on the recently inaugurated marriage well...I will have a blogging stop.

Not just any house. A house big enough to provide suitable accommodation for me, my clothes, my husband and our 12 future kids (in a future far far away). In 2012 the French prestigious patisserie Ladurée will launch their own cosmetics line ‘Les Merveilleuses de Ladurée’. Decadent French macarons, but without the calories? Sounds ‘merveilleuses’ indeed.

The collection will include 20 different blush colors as well as liquid foundation and lip color. Wild guess, but chances are the colors will include sugar sweet pastel shades. With a bit of luck the make-up will even smell (and taste if we are really lucky) like ‘the real thing’. I’m thinking pistache, rasberry, rose…

Available in Japan in January (on a critical note: don’t know why the kick off in Japan.) and expected in Europe for fall 2012. So we’ll have to put up with the real macarons for just a little while longer. Oh well, I can handle that.

So, this might be surprising to you, but today, I went shopping. And I must say, it went pretty smoothly. Thanks to my excellent preparations

(I actually took my own tips into practice, in case you missed them, read them here) I had a relaxed day and a brought home exactly what I had planned in advance. There was even time for a long lunch with cava. I knew that after that it would be a bad idea to hit sales slightly tipsy, so home it was. But, I’ll be back.

Here’s the score of the day: a coat, boots, a sweater, glasses and a table cloth, that's pretty decent I would say.

Ready, Set, Sales!

Sales embark tomorrow, a day fashionista’s on a budget (aren’t we all?) have been looking forward to for quite some time now (since the last sales period, so 5 months to be exact). So you better be prepared when you go into the madness tomorrow, cause trust me, madness there will be. In order not to end up in a fight with a fellow fashionista over a dress in reduction that will later turn out to be a misfit, here are 10 tips.

If you have the time, go pre-shopping today. No waiting lines at the fitting rooms and a clean store, this way you can pre-select your must-haves peacefully and quietly. Tomorrow then, you have but to pick your size out of the rack and go to the cashier. It’s all about being efficient isn’t it?

Go through your wardrobe before you hit the stores, this will prevent you from coming home with a red dress and realising you already have one in the back of your closet which you have never worn.

After a careful analysis of your closet with its current content, make a list of items that you are missing.

Plan your route in advance. Choose shops where you shop during non-sales periods (but where you can now do an even better deal) and shops where you wish you could shop during non-sales periods (but you can now afford).

Never been a fan of Esprit, S. Oliver or Mexx? (I am randomly stating brands) What makes you think you will find something there during sales? My advice? Don’t even bother.

Visit high street stores in the morning , the high streets shops will be total hell in the afternoon.

Personally, I prefer shopping alone, but that’s just me. If you are going with someone, go with someone who’s honest. A friend who tells you you look great in a dress that is 2 sizes too small and makes you look like a sausage, well, she’s not a good friend. Leave her at home.

Plan a budget in advance. If you lack self discipline, bring only cash and leave your bank cards at home, where they are safe from your shopping terror.

Bring one big bag to hold all your purchases, so much more convenient than all those little bags.

Enjoy your day! Don’t let the shopping madness get to you. Remember, they’re just clothes...

Along with December comes not only Santa, Christmas madness and turkey indigestion but also a long list of New Year’s resolutions. As December progresses the list gets longer every day, but unfortunately for most of us, as January unfolds most NY’s resolutions tend to end up somewhere in the gutter. Now, this year, we are going to do better…

So, especially for you my dear reader (you could consider this post as my thank you for reading my blog in 2011, please continue doing so in 2012…) one tip each day to make it through January. We’ll figure out the rest of the year as we go along.

1. N.E.V.E.R drink too much again. Probably the most popular NY’s resolution on a typical hangover day like the 1st of Jan.

2. Start saving. For real this year. As an added difficulty the universe has viciously made sales start January 3rd, so I am prepared to give you the liberty to switch this resolution with number 31…that will give you a little bit of time for a final spending spree.

3. Pick up and read that book that’s been laying on your night table, desk, coffee table.. for ages. Or throw it away if you weren’t really planning on reading it , ever.

4. Eat more vegetables, fresh vegetables.

5. Eat more fruit, fresh fruit.

6. To follow up on nr. 4 &5 : watch more cooking programs (preferably hosted by real cooks, reality tv does not make the cut, you’re not getting off that easily).

7. Half the time you spend on facebook (and that’s a minimum), you must realize: watching other people’s holiday pictures is hardly useful… This will surely give you the time to read the book from point 3.

8. More sports. Darts, billiard and Wii fit do.not.count.

9. Spend more time with your partner, for example the time you save from point 7 in case you utterly detest reading. Arrange a date like you did when you first met.

10. Stop smoking. You should have done that back in 1999 already...

11. Visit your grandparents more often. They are not going to hang around forever.

12. Do NOT buy shoes that are both too small and too expensive. The fact that they are on sale is totally irrelevant.

13. Do NOT buy anti-cellulite cream to use it only once a month and then be surprised there is no effect what so ever. Twice a day, it says so on the packaging.

14. Laugh out loud at least once each day.

15. Go see a dentist, those holes will not fill themselves.

16. Clean up your closet. Not worn in 2011? Bye bye!

17. Go to an exhibition of a young unknown artist, for all you know he's the next Picasso.

18. Invest in a smart basic like a beige trench coat, a little black dress of cognac pumps (sales are still ongoing, so you might want to hurry with this one).

19. Drink at least 1 liter of water per day. Does NOT count if you add wodka to it.

20. Depilate, it’s not because it’s winter that you're allowed to be a hairy monster.

21. Invest in lingerie, works wonders for your self esteem, exit monster.

22. Watch movie classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Casablanca. Ok, chances are big Twilight could become a classic, so I’ll approve that one as well.

23. Go to bed early.

24. Plan in some me-time into your agenda, note it with inerasable ink and with the same priority as you would for your mammography.

25. Talking about mammographies, have you already planned yours in 2012?

26. Give money to a good cause (shoes are NOT a good cause).

27. Plan in a dinner/drink date with friends you haven't seen in ages and with whom you have no de-friending plans.

28. Send out real cards for birthdays, so much more authentic than e-mail cards, even if the latter include dancing bears.

29. Take a healthy lunch to work, cheaper and better for you than a take-away sandwich.

30. If you’re travelling less than 5km, use your bike. Unless it’s pouring rain or in case you have to transport a weight over 10kg.

31. Carpe Diem, that’s the ultimate tip to survive 2012.

Turkey Indigestion

I don’t know about you but I am currently suffering from a turkey indigestion. Don’t get me wrong, I am all pro turkeys, I love them...but after a few Christmas dinners I am starting to feel like a stuffed turkey myself. And no, that is not a good thing.

Now, if you have some turkey left-overs but you’re not in the mood for another round of turkey with gravy and potatoes, make some turkey noodle soup (normally with chicken, but just a tasty with turkey). Here’s a recipe from Nigella Lawson. You can never go wrong with Nigella Lawson...enjoy!

Ingredients

1 litre chicken stock
150g thin rice noodles or mung bean thread vermicelli
200ml coconut milk
1 x 3-4cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced thinly, then cut into skinny strips
2 x 15ml tablespoons fish sauce
1 fresh long red chilli, de-seeded and cut into strips
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon tamarind paste
1 teaspoon soft brown sugar
2 x 15ml tablespoons lime juice
leftover chicken (turkey!), shredded - approx. 150g (about 2 breakfast cupfuls, loosely packed)
250g tender-shoot stir-fry or other assorted vegetables
2-3 x 15ml tablespoons chopped fresh coriander, to serve

Method

Serves: 2-3 as main, 4-6 as starter

Put the chicken (turkey...) stock in a good-sized pan to heat up.
Put the noodles in a bowl and pour boiling water over or cook as instructed on the packet.
Add the remaining ingredients, except the vegetables, to the pan and bring to a boil.
When the chicken is piping hot, add the vegetables and when they are tender – a minute or two should be plenty if you’re using the tender shoots – add the drained noodles. Or simply divide the noodles between bowls and pour the soup over them.
Serve sprinkled with chopped fresh coriander.

Among my favorite things in the world: tea, fresh flowers and…stock sales. Sometimes they suddenly pop up in your mailbox/facebook account like an unexpected invitation to a party you really want to attend. You can without doubt imagine my exaltation when the ‘Francis and Pi’ stock sale news appeared and…turned out it was next door to where I work. Coincidence? I don’t believe in that. Must be faith ordering me to get some F&P goodies.

Fashionable Farewell for Glam’it

With tears in our eyes, creditcards in our hands (left hand), cocktails (right hand), Essentiel goodies (on the arm) and snappy beats we said goodbye to Glam’it yesterday. Essentiel was the perfect location for the final ‘Late Night Shopping’ organized by the magazine that will (nobody can really explain why) disappear next year. Lots of bright pants, colorful dresses and funky accessories brightened up the mood, the candy and cocktails also helped.

Marks & Spencer in Belgium? Please?

Dear Board of Directors of Marks & Spencer,

I’ve overheard rumors that you might consider re-entering the Belgian market. Hurray! Please allow me to briefly explain why this would be rather convenient to all Belgian women aged between 18-88.

My first argument is immediately the most important one and quite obvious: NON-iron men shirts. I really do care for my husband's looks, but I do not care for ironing, as a result: NON-iron shirts: best invention ever. I have no idea why this marvelous invention has yet to cross the channel, but please make it happen, for the sake of emancipation. I’m also a big fan of the paired socks with colors to find your match. Somehow our socks always lose their mate in between washing and drying, how that happens remains an eternal mystery.

Secondly: the pants in your women’s department. I don’t know how your design team does it, but whereas I never fit into any pants of any other high street shop, yours always fit. It’s like magic. I promise I would buy at least 2 pairs per season if you install a shop in Belgium. Might seem like a small number for a huge company, but you should always appreciate the small things in life, right? Chances are, I'll also spend some euros on your 'Limited' collection, so that might help.

I would also largely invest in M&S underwear and underclothes. Might be a bad idea to reveal it on this blog, but you guys are really good in shapewear. You make me look at least a size smaller, so I always opt for the shapewear instead of a week of dieting. I hate dieting. Which leads me to my next and final argument: the entire food range. I know bad tongues say English food is rubbish (sorry for the harsh words but it’s the truth) , however I do not agree. Pastries, cheddar, scones, fish & chips... merely qualify as rubbish! And then we aren’t even talking about the teas; your calming tea is actually calming and your detox tea makes me feel better just by looking at the packaging. Genius I might say.

So taking into account all of the above arguments we can conclude a M&S store in Belgium is quite necessary and would really help the Belgian population in everyday life. So for God’s sake, please hurry in finding a location (Antwerp might I suggest?) and open it already.

Julia Restoin Roitfeld, daughter of former editor in chief of French vogue Carine Roitfeld and resource of all things fashion, has created a lingerie collection for luxury brand Kiki Montparnasse.Seems Julia – who is expecting her first baby- isn’t ready just yet to change her frivolous undies for unflattering pregnancy wear. The collections showcases vintage influences and romantic frills adding retro glamour to all day wear. Lingerie as it should be.

“I think it is really important for a woman to feel good about herself and buying lingerie that makes you feel good is a great way to start,” Julia told Elle.com. “Even if it’s just for yourself - even if no one else sees it - you know it, you feel it, and I believe it gives you that extra confidence.”

The advertising pictures look like they’ve come right of a fashion shoot that would fit perfectly in a high end magazine. A little Vogue touch there?

The collection goes on sale Wednesday, December 14th.

Turns out, I’ve been good this year, very good. Point proven today as Santa passed by. He was generous, very generous and gave me exactly what I had asked for in my letter (read it here).

Also turns out Santa has gone digital. Must say it’s great to see the slightly older generation keep up with technology, especially when that technology includes zara.com, section: shop online. Thanks Santa, hope to see you again next year!

For the collaboration between Clio Goldbrenner and Vanessa Tugendhaft, we are being spoilt (or bankrupted, that’s another way to put it), as they created a unique bag that comes in not less than 3 colors: black, red and camel. Meaning...3 must haves.

So here’s how I would split it up: black from the husband for Christmas, red from the parents for Christmas, camel from yourself as you’ve worked hard this year. Sounds like a master plan to me...

H&M has been known for its collaborations with designers for a while now. Over the years, they've had Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Victor & Rolf, Lanvin and Versace (you noticed that one a few weeks ago?) to name but a few. It's clear, H&M is not exactly monogamous on the designer front. In the past I was never tempted to stand in line for hours to get hold of one of the pieces. However, that's all going to change March 2012 as H&M will then launch a collection designed by Marni. Marni is especially known (and loved) for its modern tribal prints, surprising color combinations and bold accessories.

On the collection Marni’s Consuela Castiglioni states: “I created a small repertoire of all that represents the Marni style, for men and for women, with great attention to quality and details. It’s beautiful to be able to speak to a larger public, and in particular to the new generations: As a designer, it gives me new energy.” Well, Consuela, I’m very happy it gives you energy. That makes both of us...

March 2012 Marni for H&M will hit selected stores worldwide. I will hit anyone who comes in my way on my quest for a Marni piece. When you are the daughter of a fashion designer, inevitably there comes a moment in your life in which you will want to pursue your own creative dreams. For Emilie Duchêne, daughter of Luc Duchêne, that moment is now.

This fashionista sure knows how to keep herself busy, she is: communications manager for the company her father created ( In case this wasn’t clear: LUC.DUCHENE and Mer du Nord) and multi-brand purchaser for accessories for the LUC.DUCHENE boutiques. The December 2011 Party Tips

Most of us go through December, partying, eating and drinking like the next year famine will break out. So especially to help you survive December 2011 without too many damage: some fast track tips to make it through the holidays, in one piece:

There’s really no need to stock up food in your body for a winter sleep, because

a) Humans don’t do 'winter sleep' (though the concept sounds very attractive)

b) In 2012 there will still be plenty of food to eat, so no reason to splurge in December

Instead of counting your alcohol intakes on a daily basis, count them on a weekly basis, with a maximum of 21 units per week. Do I really need to tell you that not drinking all week and then going for 21 drinks on Christmas eve is a bad idea?

Level. A glass of alcohol and then a glass of water then again a glass of alcohol followed by a glass of water and then… you get the picture?

Now, if you do go in a little alcohol overdrive:

The moment you start dancing on tables and are convinced you can pull off a dance act like Britney (in the good old days) : get a glass of water and go home (by taxi).

In case you didn’t go home but actually performed your dance act: when you wake up immediately check facebook to untag the video’s and pictures that where without doubt uploaded in your drunk rush. If it was a family party they might treat you kind, if it wasn’t : your online reputation might have run some damage. Control-it.

After a drunk night out, you might crave hamburgers, pizza and more nasty stuff. Don’t. You already had your way the night before. During your hangover opt for fresh fruit, vegetables and whole-wheat bread. Boring? Yes. Will it make you feel better? Slightly, at least it will make you feel less bad than hamburgers… And perhaps you could add ‘never drinking again’ to your list of New Year Resolutions?

Letter to Santa (the Belgian one)

Dear Santa,

I feel like, over the past years, we have sort of lost contact. I haven’t written you any letters, and the 6^th of December there really isn’t much lying around the chimney but dust. So, we’ve both made our mistakes, but old friendship doesn’t die, so let’s pick up where we left in 1999. What do you think, Santa?

For our reunion, I suggest we both make an effort to make this a firm friendship again. So I say, I toss in a minimum of 3 carrots, a whole pile of sugar and then perhaps 2 beers?

Regarding your input, I must say , this year (and I’ll give you references if needed), I’ve been really good. So I was thinking ... cashmere. Now, I know this might seem like an overdrive in comparison to the Barbie dolls and Monopolies of back in the days (though I will never forget the year you brought that Playmobil Mansion, thanks again) but you must realise, cashmere is the noblest of materials and it will last me at least a decade.

Now, just a small hint. Cashmere comes in many forms and I would prefer it in the form of a sweater or cardigan (that’s really up to you). Don’t panic just yet. I know it’s crisis and Santa budgets are restricted and cashmere can be quite the investment. However, I have spotted very reasonably priced cashmere at Mark’s & Spencer. Now, I realise that might not be convenient for you to make a detour from Spain via the UK... so I’ve looked a bit further and guess what; great news. They stock some very nice cashmere at Zara! And Since Zara is Spanish and you resident there, it really shouldn’t be too difficult to get your hands on a nice piece.

To make your job even easier, I have preselected some items from the webshop (I am not sure you are already digitalised, but just in case).

I’m convinced that if we both make some efforts this year, 2011 will mark the beginning of a renewed and re-found friendship.

Once upon a time...at Jo Malone's

Once upon a time, Jo Malone’s advertising campaigns didn’t go much further than a bunch of herbs and flowers photographed in a bowl with some decorative limes along to complete the image. For many years Jo Malone (well known for their aromatic candles and inviting fragrances) was content with that traditional English (read: slightly boring) image.

But then along came, from a country not that far away (he’s English actually), our hero, photographer Tim Walker. Well known for his extravagant stagings and romantic pictures Tim was just the man Jo was looking for all along.

He shot the campaign for the new scent (Wild Bluebell if you must know) and had made this fairy tale come true. Have a look at the images and dream away.

Although the basics are very necessary (see previous post) , every once in a while I feel the urge to buy myself something slightly more edgy. The sort of thing, you pick up in a store and know, this could be very fashionably cool or this could go terribly wrong. The sort of thing that, when you see it in pictures years later (or even one season later) you know it probably was wrong. But fashion is sometimes about taking a plunge and adding a bit of self-relativity. After all, a touch of humor in an outfit has never hurt anyone.

So, that’s exactly why, I got myself some of the eccentric stuff this weekend. I happened to be in London and when in London, do as the Londoners do... Get fashionable.

I would like to think of my wardrobe as a way to put across who I am and what I stand for. This being said, I have decided I would like to express elegancy and style with a fashionable twist. This means my wardrobe can be more or less divided in two types of garments:

1.Elegant & stylish

2.Fashionable

Although, luckily these categories sometimes overlap….

Last week I decided to invest in categorie 1.

As I have come to the respectable age of 27, it’s time to take elegancy seriously and invest in qualitative pieces. The time of ‘fast (cheap!) fashion only’ has gone along with my teenage years. The occasional H&M piece on the side as my shopping budget is not limitless, obviously.

But as I go through my closet I realize some pieces have been there for a while and it’s mostly the slightly more expensive, decent ones. So, if you want to make a case to splurge on clothes (let’s say, for your husband/ boyfriend, pure hypothetically?) pull out the ‘investment’ argument.

Luckily, there was a stock sale last week of ‘By Malene Birger’. So the ‘sales’ argument combined with the ‘investment’ argument inevitably led to several purchases …

My scores: a clean white shirt and a silk blouse, timeless indeed!

Versace For H&M

Take your agenda and mark down: November 17th. That’s when the Versace for H&M collection will be in store. Personally, I am more a fan of H&M than Versace (Tendency to look too cheap to be worth the expensive price card and an over-bronzed Donatella does not help improve to that image) But, okay, we’ll give it a chance.

Anna Dello Russo ( the excentric fashion editor of Vogue Japan & especially known for her fashionable/weird outfits…) already strolled around the international fashion weeks in the collection and today some campaign images were released. I am now officially considering going to an H&M November 17th to get my hands on the leather dress, jacket & all the chunky jewelry. Versace meets rock meets H&M meets…me! The rest of the collection? A bit too 'Versace' for me, but make your own judgement from the pictures below.

Diamond’s are a girl’s best friend, but gemstones are pretty close friends as well. This winter, designers found their inspiration in jewelry boxes. Perhaps it’s a bit offensive to call a fourty-something director a girl, so let’s go with ‘it-lady’ for now. If there ever was a prototype of an ‘it-lady’, Jenna Lyon must be it.

There are multiple reasons which I am mor than happy to outlay in this little blog post.

a) She is creative director of J.Crew (American retailer, check www.jcrew.com for details) which means she designs and decides what America will be wearing next season. Now that’s a fun job.

b) She is a true ‘mix and matcher’. Although she’s obviously a fan of J.Crew she mixes it up with vintage & designer and it looks quircky & perfect.

c) I couldn’t find a single picture of here in which she is not completely, utterly stylish. Now, how many people can say that?

d) Her husband is an artist. Not the shabby penniless kind but the handsome, successful kind.

e) She is very much in favor of sequins, to me any person who loves sequins must be a happy person which just adds to her ‘it-ness’.

f) With an artist husband and a fashion job this one is pretty obvious but still: her house is the kind you wish you would live in, with her husband if you could…(please note that this is a joke , I am not planning on stealing anyone’s husband as I have my very own who is perfect)

Last week we had Walter, this week it’s Marina’s turn, another member of the famous Antwerp Six. If we continue like this I really hope we will have Dries & co during the next weeks.

On Monday Marina launched a collection of fabulous fabrics together with Belgian manufacturer aristide. Marina’s bohemian touch combined with the expertise of aristide offers an inspirational collection. After seeing the collection it’s clear: Marina can come and redecorate my house any time she likes…Perhaps she could call Dries to redecorate the (inside of the) dressing and then my happiness would be utterly complete. Yes, it can be that simple…

One Balmain jacket please!

Right at the top of my fall wish list resides a Balmain-like black jacket. I say Balmain-like because I am afraid (this is a euphemism for I know) that the real thing might be a bit out of reach. Unless I stop eating or shopping for like 2 months, which I don’t really feel like since I love both eating and shopping. .. So yes, it will be a ‘Balmain-like’ jacket then.

As soon as I have it I will walk around with an ‘Emanuelle Alt’-like look (ever since my trip to Paris, she’s my new style heroine). Here again ‘-like’ because, firstly, I am blonde and that immediately makes it a different look and secondly I am no vogue editor (yet I might add? Just smell the ambition…).

So hope to find that ultimate jacket soon, will surely keep you posted on the outcome.
